چکیده

Introduction Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) provides access to fibre pathways and structural integrity in white matter and is an expanding area of the research. It finds important clinical applications in managing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or multiple sclerosis. Many advanced techniques have been recently suggested for the reconstruction of the diffusion orientation distribution function with an enhanced angular resolution (HARDI). In order to enable better access to the sensitivity of the proposed diffusion indices to the underlying microstructure, it is important to develop artificial model systems that exhibit the required properties, on the one hand, but benefit from a reduced complexity on the other. The aim of this work is to construct simple phantoms that are characteristic of a sufficiently strong anisotropy and are suitable for a validation of the analytical models.

Concerning the matching of magnetic susceptibility differences for the compensation of background gradients in anisotropic diffusion fibre phantoms

Artificial, anisotropic fibre phantoms are nowadays increasingly used in the field of diffusion-weighted MRI. Such phantoms represent useful tools for, among others, the calibration of pulse sequences and validation of diffusion models since they can mimic well-known structural features of brain tissue on the one hand, but exhibit a reduced complexity, on the other. Among all materials, polyeth...

Investigating anisotropic elasticity using MR-Elastography combined with Diffusion Tensor Imaging: Validation using anisotropic and viscoelastic phantoms

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is a non-invasive imaging technique which is capable of quantifying soft tissue elasticity in vivo [1]. Most MRE studies have assumed isotropic mechanical properties although many soft tissues possess anisotropic mechanical properties due to their fibrous structure, for instance skeletal muscle or brain white matter. We propose a technique whi...

New Pulse Sequence Combining Diffusion MRI and MR Elastography (dMRE)

Introduction: MRE measures tissue stiffness, which reflects the underlying structural organization of cells, extracellular matrix, and capillaries. Diffusion MRI measures the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), which describes the random motion of water molecules in both the intraand the extra-cellular compartments. Both MRE and diffusion MRI are used for detecting diseases in soft biological...

Design of Anisotropic Diffusion Hardware Fiber Phantoms

A gold standard for the validation of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) in brain white matter (WM) is essential for clinical purposes but still not available. Synthetic anisotropic fiber bundles are proposed as phantoms for the validation of DW-MRI because of their well-known structure, their long preservability and the possibility to create complex geometries such as curve...

Physical orientation in the magnetic field affects diffusion measures: a hardware phantom study

Introduction It was shown recently in an isotropic water phantom that ADC values are not equal in each measured diffusion direction due to gradient mis-calibrations [1]. MR resonance frequency is also dependent on the orientation of anisotropic structures in the magnetic field [2], which possibly contributes to deviations in the diffusion measurement. We investigated the effect of orientation o...
